CITY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the City Internship Program is to provide students with the best experience possible to fit
their educational and career needs in order for them to gain industry knowledge, provide networking
opportunities, and obtain hands-on exposure and skill development.
Department at a Glance
The City of Mansfield Internship Program is new for FY 2020-2021. It is managed within the City
Manager’s Office and has a separate budget of $40,674.
Key Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Tailor a 12-36 week rotational internship that is specific to the departments related to the student’s
education or career/interest path.
Objectives:
• Departments provide a general outline of the mentors the intern will be assigned to.
• Departments provide a description of areas of focus for skill development.
• Evaluate and provide feedback in accordance with best practices by the program manager.
Goal 2
Intern mentors will prioritize creating opportunities for the intern to shadow the staff member and be
present during meetings with other staff and professionals.
Objectives:
• Provide coaching on mentorship best practices.
• Evaluate department outline and identify opportunities for networking.
• Interns provide completed weekly/monthly reports for evaluation by the program manager.
Goal 3
Focus on hands-on exposure and skill development by creating and assigning projects that are appropriate
for the intern’s education path or related certifications.
Objectives:
• Departments provide a summary of sample projects they would assign interns to.
• Interns provide completed weekly/monthly reports for evaluation by the program manager.
• Conduct evaluations at all program levels to create a feedback loop to affect advancement and
continued development of the program.
Performance Objectives
Because this is a new program, performance objectives and performance measures are still being
developed and will appear in future budget documents.
Measurable Outcomes:
• Develop standards for program expectations and rotation and establish a network of City mentors.
• Complete 10-20 internships in the FY 2020-2021 program year.
