K-9 SERVICES
Department at a Glance
The K-9 Department includes one officer/handler. The K-9 budget increased 17.67% due to the need for a
new fully trained canine.
Key Goals and Objectives
Goal 1
Complete a transition plan for a new K9 Handler and dog.
Objectives:
• Establish a timeline to retire the existing canine, and to obtain and train a new K9 for this
program.
• Complete the transition of a new K9 Handler for the new dog.
Goal 2
Develop a working relationship with the Tarrant County Narcotics Task Force and other agencies.
Objectives:
• Utilize the existing Mansfield Police detective assigned to the Narcotics Task Force to create a
working relationship with the K9 Unit.
• Train with neighboring cities to establish working relationships.
Goal 3
Develop enhanced training of at least two hours for patrol officers to better understand case law related to K9
use, limitations and what to expect from our new K9 and handler.
Objectives:
• Provide every patrol officer in the field with an understanding of expectations, requirements and
capabilities of K9 use for narcotics searches.
• Provide every patrol officer in the field with an understanding of expectations, requirements and
capabilities of K9 use for human tracking in buildings and at-large.
Performance Objectives
• Have a detailed plan in place for the transition of a new K9 Handler and dog.
• Expand working relationships of the K9 unit with the Narcotics Task Force and other cities.
• Develop training for patrol officers on the use of K9 units.
