BUDGET OVERVIEW
COUNCIL GOAL 2:
EFFICIENT, EFFECTIVE
TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM
Strive to provide improved traffic flow and mass
transit opportunities for our growing community.
Objectives:
Maintain leadership role on regional transportation issues
Continue to address congestion as it relates to local traffic flow
Continue to address street conditions
Develop local rail stations
Accomplishments:
Construction continues on the Smithfield and Iron Horse Stations that will be part of the
new TEXRail commuter rail service. Installation of new tracks and improvements to 10
rail crossings in North Richland Hills took place throughout the year. In addition,
practice runs for the train started in the spring of 2018. TEXRail work will continue
through 2018, with service expected to begin in January 2019.
Construction was completed on the Meadow Lakes extension east of Rufe Snow Drive.
The extension accommodates increased traffic from redevelopment along Loop 820,
and also provides the Snow Heights neighborhood with a signalized turn to go
southbound.
Construction was completed on improvements at the intersection of Rufe Snow Drive
and Glenview Drive. The improvements add capacity and ease traffic issues near the
new charter school, which funded 80% of the project’s cost.
Public Works Traffic Division staff completed just over 30% of the Regulatory, Warning,
and Street Name Sign Replacement project. This project is city-wide and includes
replacement of the signs mounted on traffic signals. It is anticipated that this project will
be complete within the next 3-5 years.
