MISSION STATEMENT COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
To foster economic vitality and the highest quality development by efficiently facilitating
development through the city review process as well as protecting the health, safety and
livability of the community by assuring compliance with the City’s ordinances.
DIVISION DESCRIPTION
The Planning & Community Development Division is responsible for coordinating review of
zoning, site plan and plat proposals by all City departments while working with developers to
ensure various standards and regulations are met, routing cases through the Planning and
Zoning Commission to City Council. The Division is responsible for Code Enforcement activities
including proactive engagement and education as well as nuisance abatement, partnering with
various agencies to assist in bridging service needs in the community.
PRIOR YEAR RESULTS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Department reorganization and consolidation with Building Inspections and GIS groups
to gain efficiencies.
Revitalized 14 homes through various City-sponsored initiatives.
Started implementing sections and initiatives from the 2017 Sustainable Neighborhoods
Plan.
Organized the Neighborhood and Community Advisory Committee (NCAC) to meet
every other month, proactively instead of reactively.
FUTURE INITIATIVES
Upgrade permit and code enforcement software to better equip code enforcement staff
in the field maximizing staff efficiencies in their code enforcement efforts.
Increase presence in Hurst neighborhoods by promoting neighborhood meetings and
education efforts.
Update and clarify sections of the City ordinance to make ordinances easier to enforce.
Review zoning ordinance and codes to promote quality neighborhoods
