COMMUNITY PROFILE AND GENERAL INFORMATION
The City of Watauga is located in Tarrant County, approximately 10 miles northeast of
downtown Fort Worth and 25 miles northwest of downtown Dallas. The City’s corporate
boundary comprises approximately four-square miles. Watauga’s estimated population
as of January 2024 is 23,775 as reported by the North Central Texas Council of
Governments (NCTCOG).
The City of Watauga is part of the Metroplex of north-central Texas, which includes the
cities of Fort Worth and Dallas and in January 2024 has a total estimated population of
8.5 million people. The economy of the area is based upon banking, commerce,
insurance, technology, energy, healthcare, medical research, transportation, and
logistics. Dallas-Ft. Worth is home to 24 Fortune 500 companies. The region boasts a
GDP of just over $688.93 billion. The 11 county Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex has been
designated as one Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA) and is the most
populous area in both Texas and the Southern United States.
Economic conditions in the Metroplex continue to be influenced by the development and
operation of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport which is located only ten miles
southeast of Watauga. The airport, which opened in September 1973, covers

approximately twenty-eight square miles and currently ranks as the 2 busiest airport in

the world based on passenger traffic and the 3 busiest based on aircraft movement.
The airport is so large that it has its own zip code and emergency services.
