CITY OF FORT WORTH EXTRATERRITORIAL JURISDICTION AND ANNEXATION POLICY
Under the provisions of State law, incorporated cities in Texas have the power to exercise certain controls in
unincorporated areas adjacent to their city limits. For a city the size of Fort Worth, these adjacent areas extend a
distance of five (5) miles from its city limits. This adjacent unincorporated area within five miles is known as the
extraterritorial jurisdictional area (“ETJ”). The ETJ encompasses approximately 313 square miles.
