            Description
In 2009, the State Energy and Conservation Of ce (SECO) awarded the City of Bedford with a $1.9 million dollar grant to install 824 solar
panels at the site of the new Library. The Library photovoltaic system produces an estimated 350,000-kilowatt hours of energy annually.
The photovoltaic system is composed of solar panels and an inverter. An inverter is one of the most important pieces of equipment in a
solar energy system. It's a device that converts direct current (DC) electricity, which is what a solar panel generates, to alternating current
(AC) electricity, which the electrical grid uses. The lifespan of an inverter is 15 - 20 years and the panels are estimated to last 25 years. The
most cost-effective time to replace a photovoltaic system is when you replace the building roof.
