The City of Bedford Development Department consists of three primary services, each with unique roles and
responsibilities.
The Planning and Zoning group is responsible for ef ciently managing private property development while supporting
business growth in line with the 2023 City’s Comprehensive Plan. Their customers include private sector developers, Bedford
businesses, prospective businesses, residents, visitors, and other City departments.
The Permits and Inspections group oversees plan reviews and permit issuance to ensure that proposed construction work
complies with the City’s adopted building codes. Their services include timely and thorough building inspections for
citizens, property owners, businesses, contractors, and authorized agents making improvements or changing building
occupancy.
The Neighborhood Services / Code Enforcement group ensures that properties in the City adhere to the Code of
Ordinances. Their mission is to create a safe and healthy community for residents and businesses. They address issues such
as work without a permit, overgrown grass and weeds, trash and debris, deteriorated fences, illegal dumping, unauthorized
signs, and abandoned vehicles. In 2022, the Multi-Family Registration and Inspection Program was re-organized and
assigned to Neighborhood Services to implement the new procedures for enforcing property maintenance codes for
multifamily properties. In addition, Neighborhood Services also oversees the registration and inspection of long and short-
term rentals throughout the City.
